the magic of polaroid

I remember when I was in sixth grade spending the afternoon at my best friend at the time’s house. Like most middle-schooler’s we quickly got bored with whatever it was we were doing and started looking around for something else to do. We eventually found her mom’s Polaroid camera, and spent the next few hours photographing all sorts of things and then waiting in anticipation for each little picture to develop. I actually still have a few of those pictures tucked away in a box in the closet. Every time I pull them out, I feel a surge of happiness remembering that lovely day. We’ve lost touch over the years, and I never knew whether she got in trouble for using up all her mom’s film, but what I do know is that seeing those pictures form from nothing right in front of our eyes was like magic, and we loved every minute of it.

There are 25 photographers out there who feel exactly the same way about the magic of Polaroid and together they compiled a book of arresting and inspiring photos titled “For the Love of Light – A Tribute to the Art of the Polaroid.” Created and edited by Jenifer Altman, the book invites us see the world through these talented photographers’ eyes.

I can’t wait for my copy to arrive. You can order one too. Just click here. You’ll get a limited edition numbered copy (one of 500) and a limited edition 5x5 print from the book.

offensive + delightful

I got a real kick out of this kooky, hip, witty, retro-inspired line of greeting cards from Offensive + Delightful. They're definitely not intended for anyone who takes himself too seriously. Or maybe they're just the thing for that somebody to get 'em to lighten up!

My faves: Hey Baby * So Old * Welcome * Happy * Thank You

I spotted these first on Design Crush... a very lovely blog full of very lovely things.

photo inspiration

I've never been more inspired to take a photography class than I was after I started looking at these amazing food shots at Dapan's Kitchen on Flickr. {That and I've never wanted to lick my computer screen more!} The images are simply delightful. And of course, I went right to the "Sweet by Dapan" set and haven't been able to think about anything but getting something sweet to eat since.

Wouldn't it be lovely to see a few of your favorites printed and framed? Here are mine. The calm simplicity of the photos is really just beautiful.

let's shop: mothology

I have been oohing and aahing over this site for months now and thought it was high-time to write a little bit about it. I don't need to say much... one look and you'll be hooked. But just in case you need a little extra urging I will say this: the vintage French table ware, linens and home accessories are out of this world.

My faves are {drumroll please}:

These hand-blown translucent blue milk glass vases and hurricanes.
A petite white ceramic pot de crème with a teeny birdie finial.
This delicate, sky-high glass pastry stand .
A newly made table runner that looks like antique French linen.

Check out everything else from Mothology here.

smitten kitten

Who doesn't need to jot down a note here or there throughout the day? I'm always scribbling phone messages and notes from my boss down on whatever piece of paper happens to be lying on my desk, and as you can imagine I've misplaced a few of those messages more than once. I wouldn't have to scramble for a spot to jot if I had one of these cute memo pads with a vintage wallpaper cover from Smitten Kitten. And I love the pencil holder!

(Memo pads shown are Deco and Picnic.)

design inspiration: bathroom decorating

Before I can get to the point of this post, I have a confession to make - one that I'm embarrassed to admit to anyone who is not my husband or my dog (and frankly, the only reason they know is because they live with me). I’m just going to throw it out there {like ripping off a band-aid, right?} My favorite show on TV right now is "Denise Richards: It's Complicated".

I cannot believe I’m admitting this.

I remember months back seeing the commercials and thinking, oh good lord, here's another one looking to get another 15 minutes. What on earth could she possibly do with a reality show? {Am I really so quick to forget how deliciously addicting reality TV can be?}

So anyway, there I am a couple weeks ago doing some Sunday night channel surfing, when I end up on E! and an episode of “It’s Complicated” that was about 5 minutes in. Denise was in her reality-TV splendor, and I was hooked. Now I’m even Tivo-ing it.

A lot of the episodes feature scenes in Denise’s bathroom, and every time there is a bathroom scene, I find myself completely enamored with its loveliness. First of all, it’s huge with soft white walls framing a dark wood floor. The extra-long vanity is on one wall with an enormous framed mirror hanging above. On the counter sit vases of roses and framed family photos. A large round tufted ottoman swathed in soft, ultra-feminine shabby chic fabrics sits in front of a white fireplace and is the place for friends to perch and talk. On one end is the shower and on the other is a soaking tub with white painted cabinets that are perfectly distressed on either end. The bathroom exudes femininity and is just so pretty.

I’d love to have a bathroom like this to call my own, and if I did… I’d fill it up with these:

Mirrored Vanity from Lorin Marsh.
Neblina Chandelier from Ironies.
Rustic Bleached Out Bonnetiere From Heather & Company, Inc.
Cloverleaf Ottoman from 1st Dibs.

Alltop Women

In case you haven't already, check out Alltop for "all the top stories". Described as "a digital magazine rack," its got tons of websites and blogs ranging from all different topics from A as in Anime to Y as in Yoga (sorry, there aren't any Z's!) The very organized site is super easy to use. I love going to Alltop Women, where I've seen a lot of my favorite blogs plus found others that I never would have known about. If an article looks interesting, you just hover your mouse over it to read a blurb of the story, and then you can decide whether you want to read more. There's LOTS of reading enjoyment here! Go ahead - see for yourself!

recipe(s) to try: brunch delight (with Smitten Kitchen)

How many synonyms are there for the word yummy? Hmm... Let’s see. There's delicious, delectable, lip-smacking, and scrumptious. Mouthwatering, tasty and toothsome. And still many others I'm sure. You get the point - there’s a lot. Well, you’re going to need every one once you start scrolling through Smitten Kitchen.

I love to look through recipes and have tons of bookmarks and favorites saved to show for it. Not to mention the countless copies that have been printed off and stuffed into my recipe keepers at home. Smitten Kitchen is always one of my go-tos when looking for a new recipe. So, naturally, this is where I stopped when I wanted to find something to make for brunch this weekend. I actually found twelve somethings. But with only one oven? Looks like I’ve got some narrowing down to do.

From top left: Raspberry-Topped Lemon Muffins * Rich Buttermilk Waffles * Leek and Swiss Chard Tart * German Pancakes * Big Crumb Coffee Cake * Pumpkin Muffins * Dream a Little Dream of Scone * Boozy Baked French Toast * Coconut Macaroon Pancakes * Spinach Quiche * Zucchini Bread * Whole Wheat Apple Muffins

Thank you, Deb, for the wonderful recipes! Your photos are just dreamy!

bottoms up!

I’m so not the type who waits for a special occasion to break out the bubbly. It’s too tasty to have only at weddings or for ringing in the New Year. Nope, I’ll enjoy a glass any old night of the week, for no special reason at all.

And after finding these, now I really want to have a glass: Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup.

Just drop a bud into the bottom of a glass, pour in some of the sweet pink syrup, top it off with champagne (or anything else that fizzes), and watch as it slowly blooms into a dazzling flower. The makers say the edible buds taste like raspberry and rhubarb… a perfect complement to champagne.

At only $13.95 for a jar of eleven, I think these are definitely worth a try. Cheers!

let's shop: pedlars 2

Just when I thought I'd seen everything there was to see on Pedlars, I went and spotted these.

Truly loving the perpetual calendars - great vintage industrial designs that would look perfect on any modern-day desk. And they're green too! You can use these good-lookin' gadgets over and over and over again.

let's shop: pedlars

What fun it is to go "window shopping" across the pond right from my cozy desk seat! Actually, it’s about all I can do with the dollar/Euro exchange rate being what it is now-a-days, but I digress. Anyway, let’s talk about the oodles of goodies over at Pedlars.com. Organized by department (home life, out and about, pure fun to name a few), it’s easy to wander through the site ogling the lovely objects along the way. Here are just a few of my favorites that I found while scouting around this afternoon.
A collection of mismatched printers' blocks. Spell whatever you like with the lovely assortment of perfectly patinated blocks. They’re all a bit distressed and loaded with character.
The folks over at Pedlars say this copper bowl was hand-hammered in Istanbul from 50 year old Turkish copper. Sounds just delightful to me. I love the hammered pattern and could see a collection of these displayed on a kitchen wall.
I can’t say that I’d actually use this vintage wasp catcher as it was intended, but I do fancy the gorgeous hand blown look and could certainly see using it as a candle holder or putting a few together on a shelf as a whimsical collection of corked bottles.

I don't even like hard-boiled eggs, but that doesn't mean I can't take a second look at these friendly little knitted egg cosies. Hello little chicken and kitty-cat!

thoughts on collecting

It all started when I was installing a Client in her new home. She was unpacking her exquisite milk glass collection, and as each piece was unwrapped I felt myself getting more and more excited to see what beautiful object would come next. Her collection is stunning. The mix of shapes and textures molded out of creamy white glass is so perfectly pretty. Each has a story, and she couldn’t have been happier to share some of those stories with me. And, oh how much I wanted a few of those pieces for my own!

That’s when I knew… I wanted to start collecting milk glass too.

I’ve always loved it… why not collect it? My mom’s “chicken bowl” is one of my favorites (the lidded bowl is shaped like a fat hen), and my grandmother has several covetable serving pieces that get brought out to the Thanksgiving table year after year. I’ve seen just how lovely a collection can look grouped together on bookcase shelves or in a hutch.

So that’s that. I’m going to collect milk glass.

what i'm reading

Do you ever find that when you near the end of a great novel you start missing it even though it isn’t even finished? You start reading slower to keep that last page from coming? And then when the inevitable happens, and you do finish that last sentence, that you read everything else on the book - the back flap, the author’s bio, the reviews – just to keep it going a little bit longer? That’s what great novels do to me. I get so caught up in the stories that sometimes they end before I’m ready. It’s like they’ve broken up with me and I don’t want to say goodbye.

This just happened to me with The Birth House by Ami McKay. I’m having a hard time putting into words why I loved it so much. Maybe it was the lovable characters and the enduring friendships they shared or maybe it was the style of writing –like a journal or even a scrapbook (as the author describes). Or maybe because at the heart of the story it was about mothers and babies and pregnancy and that’s the one thing I want most in my life right now but am having trouble getting. Most likely, it’s the sum of all these things.

I hope if you decide to read it that you love it too. I’d love to hear what you think.

recipe to try: strawberry cream cake

Cake, cream and berries… triple yum.

Believe me – this cake is every bit as tasty as it looks. I made it for a potluck dinner with friends last Saturday night, and it got rave reviews. I just had to share the recipe with you. If summertime makes you crave fresh berry desserts like I do then you’ve gotta give this recipe a try.

It's a cinch to make, and you can even make it up to a day ahead. I made a couple modifications to the recipe: instead of eggs and whole milk I used egg beaters and skim. The buttery cake was perfect for soaking up all the sweet strawberry juices. And the dollop of homemade whipped cream was heavenly.

Find the recipe here.

great grandma's hand

I spent a little time this afternoon scrolling absent-mindedly through Flickr {as I'm prone to do on Fridays} when I saw this. I don't know, maybe I'm just feeling extra sensitive or something, but the moment I saw it, I got tears in my eyes and felt my heart creep up in my throat. The hairs on my arms stood on end, but not in the creepy way... more like the "oh my gosh that is the most beautiful thing I've seen" way. Maybe you’ll feel the same. Maybe not. But for whatever it’s worth, I wanted to say thank you to ToyFoto for capturing this amazing moment and sharing it with all of us.

you call that work?

(This T-shirt was spied in a souvenir shop window; it's also available here.)

I just got back from a three-day work trip to Kennebunkport, Maine. Even though most of my time was spent unpacking musty old boxes in an even mustier old house, I still saw enough of the pretty seaside city to fall in love with it.

A few things I learned in Maine: you can never eat too many lobster rolls * ocean air brings out the best in people * the sound of waves crashing on the shore is louder than the voices in your head telling you to stop running * the perfect end to any meal is a scoop of homemade raspberry swirl ice cream * waiting for your flight is much more comfortable in a rocking chair * and last but not least: always end each day with a phone call home to say “I love you and miss you and can’t wait to see you.”

another room to love

I was sitting in on an architectural meeting with a Client yesterday, and she started showing us photos torn from magazines with the type of floors she has in mind for her new house. When I saw this one, I instantly fell in love with the room.

I was at first drawn to the soft yellow damask wall cover, the cool gray trim and the darker honey colored herringbone wood floor. All simple, neutral tones yet when they're placed together they create cohesion and depth. Only after I’d taken all that in did I really start to look at the exquisitely designed space. To me, the hallmark of good design is the blending of different styles. Here it’s done with a traditional button-tufted chesterfield sofa that shares the space with a classic Le Corbusier chaise lounge. A contemporary styled sofa peeks through from the other room. A vintage French pharmacy lamp takes the main stage next to the chesterfield and a pair of glass column table lamps rest on a stone ledge in the room beyond. I especially love the cozy, neutral tones on all of the upholstered pieces. As far as I’m concerned, this deserves an A+!

(I apologize that I don’t know who to credit for this great photograph. I’m not even sure which magazine it came from.)

quotable cards

I love greeting cards. Getting them. Sending them. They always bring a smile to my face. Especially "Just Because" cards. They're usually unexpected, always appreciated. When I was out and about last weekend, I picked up a handful of Quotable Cards. Each message is special and inspiring. And though it's nearly impossible to do, I picked some of my favorites here:

recipe to try: ricotta cakes with berry sauce

I picked up a copy of Complete Vegetarian by Nicola Graimes a few weeks ago from the Barnes & Noble bargain section. A real tome with over 300 vegetarian recipes, it's now full of dog-ears, but until last night not a single one was tested {or tasted!}. I'm happy to say that I'm now one for one with this super easy, super tasty dessert.

Juicy, sweet berries and creamy ricotta make this a light, delectable dessert that's just perfect for summer.

For the cakes:
1 generous cup Ricotta cheese
2 egg whites, beaten
4 T honey
1 t vanilla
Dash of cinnamon (optional)

For the fruit sauce:
1 cup each fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries*
1-2 T sugar
1-2 T water
*Can substitute frozen berries. Omit water if using.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease 4 ramekins and set aside.

In a large bowl break up Ricotta cheese with a wooden spoon. Add beaten egg whites, honey, vanilla and cinnamon and mix well with an electric mixer, about 2 minutes.

Divide mixture among 4 ramekins and bake in 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until tops are golden brown. (If tops don’t brown after 20 minutes, turn on the broiler for 3-5 minutes.) Remove from oven and let cool.

In the meantime, bring berries, sugar and water in a sauce pan to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat and gently mash berries with a wooden spoon. Sauce will thicken as it cools.

To serve, turn out ricotta cakes onto plates and top with berry sauce. Enjoy!

I wish I remembered to take a photo because they are as pretty as they are tasty. You'll just have to make them and find out for yourself!

summer lovin'

A mini spree at Anthropologie this weekend. Say hello to my new favorites:

chicago fave: chocolate grape

A wine and chocolate cafe in Wicker Park.

I only have two questions after reading about this adorably hip place: why haven't I been here and how soon can I go?

I wanted to lick the screen after reading the menu of mouthwatering dishes. Like the Wrapped Cantaloupe - "Fresh tantalizing Cantaloupe, wrapped in Prosciutto de-Parma and Pecorino, glazed with Honey Suckle Mango Cilantro." Or this, the Signature Grape Salad - "Peppery Field Greens, imported and domestic juicy large Grapes, Candied Almonds, enhanced with a Peach White Chocolate Vinaigrette and Herb Infused Goat Cheese." I'm sorry, did you say chocolate vinaigrette? {Cue the lip smacking.}

And then there's the desserts {like I didn't check these out first!}. A flight of Mini Cupcakes - "Six served, each with its own Dipping Sauce" and the Mini Petit Fours - "Choco decadence, mini cheesecake, tiramisu, choco torte, orange chiffon cake, mini fruit tarts, and raspberry linzer." And truffles and candies and wine, oh my!

I think next weekend is going to include a stop in at the Chocolate Grape. Maybe it'll be on Sunday for Crepe Mornings. If it's as good as it sounds, I may never leave!

chicago fave - The White Attic

When I first started this blog, I knew that I wanted to post from time to time about my favorite stops for home décor shopping in Chicago. I’m always happy to pass along resources to my friends and it feels good to applaud the very deserving and hard-working shop owners who keep me coming back for more, so I decided this was the perfect way to do both. I've written about a couple here and here, and I’ve still got lots to go, but I wanted to take a few minutes today to talk about The White Attic. No list of Chicago favorites would be complete without it.

Now, I ruefully admit that it has been a while since I’ve stopped in at the amazing little Andersonville furniture shop, and so I don’t even know what lovely one-of-a-kind pieces you’d find right now, but I can guarantee that if you love the idea of taking something old and making it beautiful again, then you won’t be disappointed with The White Attic. Full of vintage (a lot of 70’s era) furnishings that have been given a new lease on life through a shiny coat of paint (in classic hues like black and white, but also pink, blue and green) and eye-catching hardware. I like to call this "loving up." Each piece is unique and has that special home-made feel. And there are also great accessories sprinkled throughout the shop, including Votivo candles, my favorite.

If you're in the Andersonville neighborhood, I highly recommend stopping in to The White Attic. While you're there, say hello to Terry, owner-extraordinaire.

a not-so-typical weekend

If you're like me you fill your weekends up with to-dos: Clean the house. Pick up dry cleaning. Grocery shop. The weekend tasks are always there, always keeping me busy, and always using up too many precious "free time" minutes. Sometimes once Sunday night rolls in, I don't feel like I've had any break at all.

Wade left last Thursday for a golf trip with friends, and so it was just me and Lulu this weekend. I started worrying about how I was going to handle being a "single mom" and still do all the things I usually do on my Saturdays and Sundays. When he's around I can just come and go, and I know that he'll be home to take care of her, but (gasp!) how was I possibly going to deal with her on my own? How could I leave the house to run errands for hours at a time, lots of times, knowing that Lulu would be home all alone? And if I do stay home with her, how am I supposed to get everything taken care of? What about Dad's Father's Day gift and Wade's suit that needs to be dropped off at the cleaners? What will I do if these things don't get done?

You know what? Nothing got done, and it was fine. It was better than fine. I had a great weekend. And the best part? Was all that "nothing" that I did. I didn't run all over town checking off each errand one by one or take time to clean the house from top to bottom (even though it REALLY needs it!). Nope, this weekend I spent the time taking lots of long walks with The Lewster and then even longer naps on the sofa. I read all the issues of "Domino" that had been piling up, and the only errand I ran was to Trader Joe's to get ingredients for strawberry smoothies (an essential on 90+ degree days!) and a bouquet of gorgeous peonies.

Ahh... what a wonderful weekend. I could (and should!) get used to this (except that I'd want Wade around, too!)

classic reading

My friend, Betsy, and I were talking about "The Wind in the Willows," which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. We chatted about how much we both loved that book and its enchanting riverbank world. Reading it as a kid would transport me to a make-believe place that was so real in my imagination. We would play Wind in the Willows in the backyard, and I cherish those memories.

This got me to thinking about other books that I would read and reread as a kid, getting lost in the worlds on the pages. We’d spend weeks pretending we were Laura Ingalls Wilder exploring the Western frontier or Anne of Green Gables working on the farm. And I laugh just thinking about the time we dragged an old wash tub down from the attic in the garage, filled it up water, jumped in clothes and all, and then hopped out and spun as fast as we could to dry off just like Pippi Longstocking did. I wished I had a Secret Garden hidden away and liked to pretend Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy had a fifth sister, so I could be one of the Little Women too.

Just writing about all of these makes me want to read them again now. I wonder if they would be as magical to an adult as they were to me back then? I sure hope so.

(Image above from LarkingAbout's Ladybird Books Collection via Flickr)

how does your garden grow?

So, I took my first stab at container gardening last weekend, and even though I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing and am now just crossing my fingers and toes that everything I planted stays alive, I've gotta say that I found myself really enjoying the process. From picking each little bloom at the nursery {and translating those care cards} to watering our newly planted creations, I was just so content spending the afternoon digging in the dirt. I didn't even mind the several trips to Target for more soil (I really underestimated the sizes of our planters!)

Now all I've gotta do is keep Lulu away since she loves nothing more than to eat plants and bite the blooms off flowers. Oh yeah - and my mom bought us the Topsy Turvy, which we have been chomping at the bit since December to use. We should pick up some tomato plants this weekend to give this wacky thing a try.

For gardening in style, try these: Sun hat and garden gloves from Hable Construction, Recycled watering can from Patina, and Galvanized planters from CB2. (I have three and love them! They're super lightweight and very modern. The only thing we had to do was drill some drain holes in the bottom of each.)

easy, breezy summer

Probably most of us think of Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start to summer. It's a weekend for bbq'ing, hitting the Chicago beaches, and busting out our white purses and capri pants. I kicked off last weekend with a long run early Saturday morning. It was perfect - the sky was blue, the breeze was cool, the sun was shining and the city was just waking up. I got to thinking about how thankful I am to be living in such a great city and how much I look forward to this time of year. Here are a few more things about summer that make me just so happy to be here:

movies in the park * farmer's markets * long walks at dusk * fireflies * freckles * iced tea * cubs games * rooftop barbecues * blooming lilacs * warm breezes through open windows * corn on the cob * street fests * butterflies * blueberry pie * scooter's frozen custard * thunderstorms * the lakefront * napping in a hammock * margaritas * dinners al fresco & sidewalk cafes * chilled champagne with peaches * lazy afternoons reading gossip mags under the sun

t(ea) is for terrific!

I love my new White Darjeeling Tea Handsoap from Beautea Organic. Every time I wash my hands in our downstairs bathroom, I find myself stopping to take in the lovely tea and jasmine scent. It also leaves my hands feeling incredibly soft, which is always a good thing.
