I am s l o w l y getting myself back in the routine after such a nice, refreshing break. All the Christmas stuff is put away, and I'm trying to find homes for the many new toys for the Twinkies. (A toy purge is definitely in the works.) All in all, our holiday was just lovely. How was yours?

Of course with a new year comes the chance to reflect on what's passed and to plan for my future. Here are a few things on my list for '12:

find a new yoga class.

learn how to (properly) use my camera.

wear heels more often. (like these!)

plan weekly date nights with the hubs.

eat fresher. eat greener.

work on empathy.

put together our wedding album.

and a doozie, which I realize is not entirely in my control, but I would certainly love to see happen in 2012:

sell our house and find a new one in the ‘burbs!

So, some big, some small, some that come with not much effort and others that require serious time and attention. And one that might need a little luck, too.

But I do think twenty-twelve is going to be a great year. Don’t you?

I am so excited for tonight... we're meeting a big group of friends out at one of my favorite French bistros for a yummy dinner that will hopefully include copious amounts of butter, champagne and chocolate. And lots of laughs, too! I've been looking forward to this night for weeks and don't want to admit how many times I've already looked at the menu online to think about what I might order. ;)

And if that isn't enough, I'm co-hosting our 6th annual(!) cookie exchange with some amazing girlfriends who I don't get to see nearly enough. Can't wait to take home a tray of fresh-baked cookies from all my lovely ladies.

10 things: getting to know mary loves

This week's 10 Things is brought to us by sweet Mary of Mary Loves. I just know that if Mary and I lived down the street from one another - rather than across the country - we would be friends. Friends who bake treats for each other, enjoy cocktails on our front porches together and celebrate summer at a local street fest with our families. There are times that Mary will write something, and I would just swear that I was thinking the exact same thing. I love popping over to Mary Loves to fill up my cup of inspiration.

I never tire of... watching sunsets. I suppose there are lots of things I could've put at the end of that sentence, but this is what leapt to mind, and it's certainly true. Every sunset is different, beautiful, magical, and peaceful. And if you have the opportunity to sit and really watch one? Well that is a good day.

The most romantic thing a person can do is... listen. Flowers or a surprise gift or trip are wonderful, certainly, but isn't it the best when you feel like you are truly being heard? If you want to be romantic, have dinner. (Making it is a nice touch.) Really look into her eyes over a good bottle of wine. And listen.

When I need to blow off steam I... take a walk. Getting out in the fresh air, surrounded by nature. That's where I find peace.

I'm happiest when... I'm having tickle fights with my boys. Or reading stories with my boys. Or just watching them sleep. You get the picture, don't you? My boys are my love, and all I have to do is look at them to feel happiness.

I always wanted to be... well I don't know about always, but what I talked about the most as a kid was an astronaut. I really thought I'd end up going into science in some way. However, differential calculus kicked my butt in college, so economics and business won out.

The best thing I ever ate was... snails in Paris. Sorry, escargots. But really, let's just call them what they are. They were drenched in olive oil and garlic and were simply amazing. I know what you're thinking. "Really? Snails?" I could say blueberry ice cream, or lobster, or any number of amazing things I've had. The reason why I chose snails is because it was such a memorable meal. My sister and I visited Paris in my early twenties. It was my first trip to Europe. We ate at a true Parisian restaurant recommended to us by a friend. It was a tiny little room with just a few tables. The chef came out and had drinks with us afterwards. We drank wine. We laughed and laughed and I swear our French was better the more we drank. The meal was amazing in every sense, and I don't even remember anything else we ate. So I'm going with snails.

My signature dish is... a strawberry-almond cream tart. And sangria. I make a mean pitcher of sangria.

My favorite thing about my house is... it's a tie between my front porch and my bathroom. I adore having a front porch. I love being able to sit outside, watching a thunderstorm roll through. I have always preferred front porches to back decks, since I feel they are much more effective at connecting you with your neighbors. My bathroom, though, is pretty awesome. We have renovated a lot of our house so far, and this bathroom is perfect. Nice big shower, where I can stand and look across the street at the river. And a big clawfoot tub. I don't get to use it often enough, but oh, when I do...

I could spend the whole day... listening to music and trying to play my guitar. I love finding new music. And when I find a band I like, listening to an album all the way through. And then listening to my favorite songs again, really getting to know them.

The best thing to wake up to is... the sunshine and chirping birds. Of course, I have two little ones, so I haven't been woken up that way in a really long time. I have a CD alarm clock, and I had cello music in there for a while - that was nice. Right now I'm waking up to Pearl Jam during the week and "Mom! I want to wake up!" on the weekends.

Mary - thank you so much for sharing with us. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that your Parisian dinner sounds amazing, and yes, I'd love a sangria! ;)

It was raining this weekend so I wasn't able to go out and get my Christmas tree, and though I know that I only have to wait a few more days for next weekend, I'm still a little bummed because I always decorate my tree on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

To get me through the rest of the week I'll just keep looking at lovely yuletide photos like this to inspire new decorating ideas.

I am just tickled pink to be sharing a special "10 Things" with you today featuring the adorable Melissa of Reverie Daydream. Melissa's words and photos are chock-full of insight, inspiration and charm, and though I've never met her, I imagine that Mel is one of those people who lights up a room when she walks in. The kind of person who you want to be seated beside at a dinner party. Her's is a favorite of mine, and I hope you enjoy reading her "10 Things" as much as I did.

Away we go!

When I need to unwind: I grab a book or a glass of champagne.

I hate to admit it: but I have a huge weakness for gummi bears. In fact, I will not even let one come near my lips for fear of eating the entire box.

My celebrity crush: is Johnny Depp. Since a teenager when posters of his 21-Jumpstreet Face covered my walls.

I’m my most creative: when I first wake up. My mind is filled with ideas and inspiration, and I instantly have to jot down all that is racing through my thoughts.

My quirkiest habit: is ‘organizing’ everything into piles. If it is an object, there is a pile for it.

A friend will always: be there for you through good and bad.

It’s worth the splurge: good cheese.

The best thing I ever ate: is a bowl of morel mushroom risotto in Paris.

I could spend the whole day: wandering anywhere and everywhere.

If I didn’t have to work: I’d globe trot.

10 things: getting to know

It has been AGES since we've had a "10 Things" post, and so I am so excited to kick off another round of my little question and answer game with Annie of Elsa May. Can I just tell you how much I lurve Annie's blog? Top to bottom eye candy in every post.

Onward to Annie's 10 Things...

The last thing I do before bed is: check on my sleeping boys and kiss them goodnight.

If I didn't have to work, you'd find me: gardening or horse riding.

The last time I cried was: when I was thrown a good four metres off my horse - ouch!

My signature dish is: probably apple and berry crumble.

When I need to blow off steam I: head out for a brisk walk somewhere green.

The best place to be in the fall is: walking in the woods, or out in the paddocks on my parents farm. And the best time is late afternoon when the light and temperature are falling, and you can smell the woodsmoke from the chimney as you walk home.

I could spend the whole day: gardening or horse riding. A truly indulgent day would be spent curled up with a book - no interruptions, and no have-to-be-somewheres.

The book I can read again and again is: hmm...this changes from time to time, but Jane Eyre is a good "comfort" go to.

The farthest I've been from home is: technically (as in the most miles) it would have to be Edinburgh, Scotland.

The best thing about my family is: that they are always there for me, no matter what. And that I can talk to my parents about absolutely anything.

The words I live by are: treat others how you'd like to be treated. Oh, and try to remember to be kind to yourself (easier said than done).

You'll always find in my pantry: dark, dark chocolate.

Annie - thank you SO much for taking the time to do this. Means a ton. Your photos and thoughts have inspired me to get outside and breath in some fresh air!

thoughts

I had a few ideas swirling for what I might write about today, but then I started reading this blog, and now my heart just hurts. Everything else just seems too fluffy now.

What I really want to do is shut off my computer, go pick up my bunnies from daycare, take them home and hug and kiss and hold them tight. And I want my husband there with us. He's been working late the last few nights, you see, and I miss him.

Life is so, so precious.
I hate that it takes tragic stories like Anna's to remind me of that.

Pinky-swear that you'll go home tonight and tell those special people in your life how much you love them, K?

october's gone by in a flash

Happy Friday, Friends!

Our weekend activities will be very Halloweenie -- we're kicking off the weekend by watching "The Great Pumpkin" tonight with the kiddos (followed by the third episode of "American Horror Story" after the kids go to bed -- sooo scary!), and I'm heading to the farmer's market tomorrow morning with a dear friend for pumpkins and mums. On Sunday I am taking my first Reformer class at a local pilates studio. Looking forward to the burn!

And I'm very happy to say hello to you again.

October's almost over, and I've been super busy with all sorts of stuff...

There's been cooking. Making our tummies happy and my house smell oh so good. Now if only I could convince Henry & Millie that mommy's cooking skills go beyond boiling water for their much loved "noodles."

We devoured Skillet Rosemary Chicken earlier this week. Delicious.

There's been baking. Something about the cooler weather makes me want to be in the kitchen every moment I can. My latest creation was Ricotta Breakfast Bars. My kitchen smelled amazing while they baked, and I didn't feel quite so guilty eating 'just one more piece' because they are chock-full of good-for-you stuff.

And now I'm busy narrowing down the list of treats I want to bake up for Monday's neighborhood Halloween party. I'm thinking a platter of S'mores Pops will be perfect, especially ones topped with black and orange sprinkles.

I've also even crafted a few projects. Like these ghosts. We turned them into Halloween cards. I've gotta tell you there is nothing funnier than painting your kids feet and listening to them giggle because it tickles. I'm smiling now just thinking about it.

welcome fall

It happens every year. The mercury stops its climb at 70 degrees, and before I know it, I’m daydreaming of afternoons spent at apple orchards and eating homemade pumpkin bread just out of the oven. I wake up with a renewed energy to head out for my morning run – because there really is no better run than the kind where the grass is wet with dew, and the air is chilly enough that I’ll leave my long-sleeved tee on the whole time – and I have the urge to listen to Ella and Bing again.

What ratchets this year’s fall season up a bit higher on the ‘special’ scale is that I get to spend it with my newly two-year olds who are busily learning every new thing there is to know about their world. What a magical time of year for them! Things are changing. Leaves are falling, geese are honking up above, and Mommy’s busy baking tasty treats again. This fall will mark the first time they run through a leaf pile and pick their own pumpkins at a patch; this fall they get to taste how delicious hot cocoa is after playing outside on a chilly afternoon.

It's the simple things that make me so happy, and I can't wait to share these special first moments with them.

spotlight: farmaesthetics

I've read about Farmaesthetics online. The farm-grown, organic skincare products have gotten a lot of buzz lately. I never knew there was a shop, though, until we started on our run down Bellevue Avenue in Newport last Saturday. There it was just across the street from our hotel. I popped in on Sunday morning, and the apothecary boutique was every bit as charming as I would have imagined.

Every inch of the small space was considered - from the black-and-white striped awning on the storefront to the antique mantle at the fireplace. There was one whole wall of glass-front cabinets holding rows of glass bottles and stacks of tins. No detail was overlooked, and the result was a crisp, quiet space with a very old-world feel.

Listening to jazzy tunes in the background, I could have spent the entire morning perusing the lotions and potions. (And probably would have if Wade wasn't with me.)

I wasn't able to get all the things I would have liked (darn those carry-on rules!), but I still came away with a few goodies and a handful of samples the sales girl graciously threw in.

Next time? I am so signing up for a facial.

I've got to add a new favorite to my list... Newport, RI.

Cresting the bridge into town took my breath away as the view opened up to amazing beach houses, sailboats in the harbor, and vibrant, colorful flowers galore. It was postcard pretty.

We stayed in a lovely old hotel that stood among shops, restaurants and the mansions on Bellevue, which were so enormous my idea of mansion is forever changed. (Think 140,000 square feet!)

We wined, we dined (on plenty of fresh seafood) and even got a chance to catch a flick on a rainy afternoon. Oh, and how could I forget this? We slept in! (I haven't slept until 8:00 since before the kids were born. What a treat!)

It was the perfect long weekend away, and after only a few days there, I completely fell in love with this little city on the sea.

All that's missing was The Twinkies. It was the first time I was away from them for so long, and I missed them loads. I was so happy to see them when we got home! (and it made leaving all that much easier.)

Probably my favorite thing about a room is when there's a mix of old and new. Pieces that have been well-loved and with a story to tell that are living side-by-side with new pieces that have been thoughtfully selected.

Kind of like this bathroom with its old, chipped bench and sleek glass-walled shower.

a weekend in newport

[UPDATE: sorry that i'm posting this again, but i'm trying to figure out why there are problems linking the photos. argh! any suggestions?]

A few months ago over dinner at my sister's house, she casually mentioned that she'd love to take the kids for a weekend so Wade and I could get away and celebrate our anniversary. Of course we are thrilled to take her up on it! (I honestly could not leave them in more capable hands.) And I'm so excited that our weekend away is nearly upon us -- next weekend, to be exact!

We're heading to Newport, RI, which I have heard nothing but good things about. I'm already daydreaming about lobster rolls, lazing at the beach and sleeping in.

And now I've got to think about what to pack.

chicago fave: the doughnut vault

I would like to introduce you to a new favorite place...

I don't know how long this little spot where heaven meets earth has been open, but I've gotta tell you, the doughnuts are so good! And I don't even consider myself a doughnut person. Well, until now at least.

There are only so many delectable doughnuts churned out each day, and so if you get there late you might just be out of luck. It's genius, actually. Tell someone that she might not be able to have something, and of course she's going to want it more! Most mornings you'll see a line of hungry peeps out the door waiting to get their doughnut fix.

Lucky me, The Doughnut Vault just happens to be down the street from my office.

And yes, I am more than willing to get in line...

vacation

A week away from it all...

The kids and I took a trip to my parent's house in Wisconsin last week for a much-needed vacation. A week away in a quiet suburban neighborhood with nothing to do but play outside in the fresh air did wonders for us all. (I don't think my kids have ever slept better - or gotten dirtier!) My biggest concern was to remember to reapply our sunscreen. It was easy, breezy vacation living.

And for the first time in a long time, I can honestly say that I feel rested. Really rested. Since I've become a mom to twins, I've gotten used to feeling at least a little bit tired (if not completely exhausted) much of the time. They wear me out! I guess it's a rite of mommyhood.

So this little break from normal, this little trip away where we didn't have anything to do but enjoy each other's company was everything I could have asked for.

(My daily afternoon naps were pretty nice, too.)

Especially those bloomers! I'd be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn't melt at the sight of those little ruffly bottoms toddling by.

a happy moment

I had one of those moments yesterday. One of those aha! moments when my mind was completely, 100% focused on the present. And it was wonderful.

I'm sorry to admit that these don't happen very often for me. Most of the time, my thoughts make up a confusing cobweb of must-dos... remember to take the chicken out of the freezer, add graduation cards to the Target list, do I have time to do a load of laundry? And unfortunately, that doesn't leave much room for smelling the roses, so to speak.

But yesterday. Yesterday, my friends, I was standing in the kitchen, putting together the ingredients for a strawberry rhubarb crisp, when I looked out the window and noticed how beautiful our neighbor's birch tree looked blowing in the breeze. How the sunlight filtered through the leaves onto the bricks behind, and I just stopped. My breath caught up in my throat, and I felt so happy. I was doing exactly what I was meant to be doing at that moment. And as that feeling of contentment flooded in, I had this wonderfully profound feeling that my life is so good. And I am exactly where I am meant to be. Right here. Right now.

As with all aha moments, it went just as quickly as it came, but not without leaving a little dent. I did get back to baking my crisp and tackling the ump-teen dos on my list, but even today, over 24 hours later, I still haven't forgotten about my happy, quiet, fleeting moment.

And I look forward to catching more of them.

My parents spent last weekend at our house. It had been a pretty long time since they visited, and so I wanted to mark the occasion with a special treat. And since I come from a long line of sweet-tooths, I knew it had to be really, really good.

While I was weeding through my recipes, I kept coming back to these Raspberry Brownies. The recipe looked simple enough (kind of a necessity now that twins are underfoot!), and I'm such a sucker for the combo of rich chocolate and tart berries. So the decision was made, I mixed up the batter, sprinkled some fresh berries on top, popped them in the oven, waited - very impatiently - for the timer to ring while the smell of dark chocolate filled our entire house, and then proudly brought them to the table once our dinner plates were empty.

Oh. my. gosh. Let me tell you about these brownies. In a word, perfection. Rich, chewy, dark chocolate. Not too sweet. And with little bites of fresh raspberry flecked throughout...

Needless to say, they were a hit. ;)

PS - the only thing that can possibly make these better is a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Of course I speak from experience.

Morning, Sunshines! Hope you had a lovely weekend.

Speaking of sunshine... we had NONE for the past three days. It was quite possibly the coldest, rainiest, dreariest, windiest May weekend in history. (Well, that I can remember at least.)

But walking out to sunshine and blue skies and the greenest, green grass and brightest spring flowers (thanks to all that rain!) put a big smile on my face, and so I guess our lazy weekend at home wasn't quite so bad...

And all that spring-ness outside made me think of this...

Bold, bright, colorful. Just like a spring garden. It would be a treat to wake up in this bed every morning.

it's hummingbird cake, y'all

A few weekends ago, Wade took me to Table 52 for dinner. Dinner was outstanding, but the real show-stopper was dessert. We finished our meal with one of the most delicious, won't soon be forgotten slices of cake I have ever eaten. It was Hummingbird Cake, which from what I've heard, is a pretty popular cake down South. And now I can't stop thinking about it!

The love child of banana bread and carrot cake (except with no carrots at all, but with pineapple) and with thick layers of cream cheese frosting, this cake has very quickly staked its place in my top five favorites list...

And I am so excited that I found not just the recipe but HIS recipe! online.

Now I need a special occasion to make it. Perhaps because tomorrow is Tuesday would be a good reason, no? I'll let you all know how it goes. And if you happen to have a recipe for Hummingbird Cake that you love, please share!

PS - Everything about dinner was uh-mazing, and I highly (highly!) recommend it to anyone in Chicago.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

I loved the format of this historical fiction! It's comprised entirely of letters sent between the residents of Guernsey (members of the "Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society") and Juliet, a writer in London. She wanted to know more about the German occupation of Guernsey during World War II. They wanted to share their stories of hardship and triumph. And so the plot unfolds! Juliet's witty writing reminded me of some of my favorite blogs... if she was around today (and a real person!), I just know she'd have one.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

You know a book is a good one, when every girl on the train is reading it on the way to work, and when Wade said he'd seen lots of people with "The Help" in tow, I knew I had to add it to my reading list. (My friend loaned it to me, so that helped too!) Set in Jackson at the start of the civil rights movement, it's the story of three women who become the unlikeliest of friends as they work together to write an eye-opening book about the reality of Jackson's young white women and the black maids they employ. Loved it. And Hooray! I saw that it's been made into a movie and coming to theaters this summer. The entire time I was reading, I was imagining what a good movie it would make.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

I cannot believe I waited so long to read this book! (It wasn't part of my high school English syllabus, and though I'd recognized the title, I didn't know anything about it until a friend recommended it.) First published in 1943, "Tree" tells the story of Francie Nolan, a bright, but lonely girl growing up in the Brooklyn tenements at the turn-of-the-century. Living in poverty, she had very few possessions and lived a pretty tough life, enduring hardships no child should ever have to face. But she had a vivid imagination and found simple pleasures in even the littlest things. Betty Smith's writing through the voice of a child is so beautiful and memorable and makes this book easily one of my favorites.

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood

The last few weeks or so, this book has been at the top of our pile of bedtime books. Sometimes it's actually the only one we read because before I even have a chance to say "the end," Henry and Amelia are already asking with great insistence for "moh, moh, moh!" Most nights we read it five or six times before they've had their fill (and I've managed to convince them that the little mouse has gone to bed). Thank goodness it's a cute story and with even cuter illustrations, otherwise I'd go crazy reading it so much!

This one here, though, of a sunny office overlooking a scenic, tree-filled vista on Cape Breton Island made me catch my breath...

Could you imagine working at your desk and getting to gaze at that view every day? I could sit there for hours (given a more comfy chair, that is!)

I imagine myself gliding in and out with ease. Marveling at how organized everything is. (Basically, it's the EXACT opposite of my current sad, little crowded routine - trip over the dog, while putting on shoes, without dropping purse, while digging for keys, and convincing kiddos to sit still.)

And we've got tasty brunches and dinners out planned with friends. Just like I knew it was right to step away for a while a few months ago, it feels so right to be back now, starting again from where I left off. Hello again!

And now it's spring here in Chicago! And it feels so nice. Even if it is only 50 degrees. And supposed to rain. But I'm not gonna let that get me down because we had a rotten winter (rotten!) and a little rain now means gorgeous flowers and green grass later.

For now, I'm just so excited to be back and to show you all the wonderful things that I've been filing away, knowing that I'd share all the loveliness with you some day again. The day is come! And today I am loving her cheery, colorful prints...

it's time

Here we are nearly wrapping up January, and I haven't even gotten around yet to telling you about my resolutions for '11.

This year, I don't have a list. It's just one thing, actually. This year, I am not going to spread myself thin with too many commitments and too many to-do's. It happens all the time... I can't say no (or I don't want to say no) or I just have to finish this "one more thing" before I go do this, this or that, and I feel anxious the entire time because I'm trying to get everything done. And then I feel guilty when I'm unable to get to everything, which of course happens more often than not! And it's a horrible cycle that I don't like very much at all, and so I figure I can avoid the whole thing if I am just realistic about what I can and cannot commit to and do.

One project that has continually been pushed back is this very blog. I haven't been able to give it the time or the energy I had when I started on this adventure a few years ago, and the quality of my posts really shows it. I want to do better for you, but don't know how to fit that in with everything else. And so it's time I say goodbye. Maybe not forever. But definitely for now.

I want to thank you all so much for your visits. For listening to my stories and sharing your thoughts with me. The fact that you took the time out of your day to write something to me has made such an impact, I wish I had better words to say thank you.

decor idea: terrarium

Aren't terrariums cool? Little gardens growing beneath a glass dome. What a great way to add a fresh breath to your house -- especially during the dark days of winter. This example, with moss overflowing from the edges, is gorgeous...

I'd love to grow my own terrarium garden, but I'm not exactly sure how to begin. And this might sound like a dumb question, but how do the plants stay alive in there? Would I have to periodically take the top off so they can get some fresh air? Or does that defeat the whole purpose? I'm going to need to do some research. Any know-how you can share on the subject is much appreciated!

I'm still here. Beginning the new year at the same frenzied pace that I ended the old one with and still trying to get used to being a working mama. I'm a little tired from the whirlwind of activity that is our new "normal", but very much looking forward to the fresh start of a new year and for exciting adventures with my Twinkies.

I am so glad it's Friday, dear Friends. We now have three weeks under our belt of me back at work and my Twinkies at daycare. Things are going OK, we're definitely still trying to get used to our new routine. Thanks so much for all your well wishes!

Any plans for the weekend? I'm going to be a busy baking bee! I'm co-hosting a baby shower for my dear friend, Hill, on Sunday, and I have lots of treats to whip up for the big event. I've got a bit of a friend-crush on Clotilde. The more I read her blog, the more I want to be her friend! I imagine how great it would be to pop over at her little flat on a quiet afternoon to talk about our fabulous French lives (in my imagination I'm French) and sip champagne as she whips up delicious nibbles and teaches me how to do the same.

I read Chocolate & Zucchini from cover to cover and have marked nearly every recipe to try. (Perhaps it would have been better to mark the recipes I didn't want.) A few of her recipes have made their way into our regular dinner rotation, and I have yet to meet a simpler, tastier cake than the yogurt cake.

So, knowing how great the others have been, I've simply got to bake these...

big announcement (well, for me at least)

I wanted to share some news...

After a few months of thinking about it and lots of long talks with the Hubby and close friends about it, I've decided to go back to work. And I start... TOMORROW! I'm going back only part-time - Tuesday through Thursday, and well, I'm really excited (and a little nervous!) to get back into it. I've missed being a designer quite a lot. While I'm at the office, the Twinkies will be making new friends and having new adventures at daycare.

I know it's going to take us quite a while to get used to things. And surely there will be times that I ask myself, "what the heck am I doing this for?" (Like when we're scrambling to get out the door in the mornings to get everyone to where they need to be!) But really this part-time gig is pretty awesome. I'll be at work 3 days, and the rest of the days I'll be home with my Little Beans. I think it's going to be pretty great, actually.

So, wish me luck!

Hooray the weekend is here again!

Tonight is all about cuddling on the sofa with my honey and catching up on our taped TV shows from the week. Tomorrow I'm heading to a friend's house so we can start planning the menu for a baby shower we're hosting, and tomorrow night we're having some friends over for dinner. I'm making a cheesy baked gnocchi and a pumpkin cheesecake for dessert. I'll let you know how it goes!

The entry in my house is pretty much non-existent. A little 5x5 box, with the main door on one wall, the garage door on another, a huge glass block window on the third, and a stairway leading up to the main floor on the last wall, there's not much in the way of space to move around, much less to decorate it in a way that says, "welcome, friends! kick off your shoes and stay a while."

This entry, however? Well, I'm already unlacing my sneakers...

All that light pouring in from the door, sidelights and transom is breath-taking. And I've always wanted an entry big enough to fit a center table.

For years now, I've dressed my bed in all white - duvet, shams, sheets, everything. And I've been really happy with it. (Even with a black furry dog.) I think Karey M once wrote something about sleeping on marshmallow fluff, and I thought that just describes it perfectly.

But then I saw the collection of handmade Indian textiles over at Sang and Serena Co. and went gaga over it.

And now I can totally see my bed dressed in this...

back in the saddle again

What began as just a few days off quickly spiraled into a few weeks, and before I knew it a few months even, but I'm so happy to be back now. Hello friends! I hope you've been having a splendid fall. This is my most favorite time of year. Crunchy leaf piles, baked apples and sweater weather make me smile.

Just a few favorite fall things...

Trader Joe's pumpkin butter for breakfast.
Makes waffles taste heavenly.

Cozy pj's.
And tucking under a cozy down comforter for bed.

Orange and black.
Which, coincidentally, are my high school colors. go Phantoms!
(And, upon closer look, the stripes may actually be brown, but close enough!)

Trading in flip-flops for (beautiful!) boots.

Hello Friends!

My Friday letter might be a little late as I'm sure you're already on your way out for a night of fun, but I just wanted to pop in and wish you a lovely weekend. No plans for me tonight. Just some lazing on the sofa with Hubby. And a glass of wine.

I keep thinking that at this time last year, I was in the hospital eagerly (and anxiously!) awaiting the arrival of my Twinkies. I spent the day reminiscing with thoughts popping up whenever I looked at the clock... this time last year I was on my way to see the doctor; this time last year, I was being rolled up to the delivery wing; this time last year I was beginning to wonder if these babies were ever going to come. (Little did I know that it would take them *all* night to make their grand entrance!) I know I'm the proverbial broken record, but I just can't believe it's already been a year!

And boy am I looking forward to the weekend. Tomorrow will be all about celebrating my little H-man and Millie Monkey. And then Wade and I are going to get all dolled up for a friend's wedding that night. I can't wait to put on my dancin' shoes!

hello + a week of kid stuff

Hi Friends!

Have a nice weekend? Mine was about as perfect as can be with bright sunny days that felt a little bit like fall. I bought delicious plums and a colorful bunch of zinnias at the farmers market. We enjoyed a tasty lunch out with a pair of our dearest friends on Sunday. And we took a little trip to the suburbs to visit friends who just moved. Don't you just love long weekends? I wish every one could be 3 days.

Henry and Amelia are going to turn one (one!!) this Saturday and to honor their big day, I'll be doing a week of kiddie stuff posts leading up to the weekend.

Today I have a peek into a super cool whale room photographed by Mark Lund...

Great colors, no? I wonder where to find that wallpaper...

Hooray for Friday!

Guess what, Friends? I'm over at Momtastic today sharing a bit of the behind-the-scenes that went into planning Henry & Amelia's nursery. Momtastic is a really cool site with all sorts of stuff to keep you busy. If you have the time, take a peek!

This photo above is Henry's side of the room. It's a good thing I took this picture before he got teeth because now it's flecked with little bite marks all around the edge, and I'm not photo savvy enough to know how to cover that up.

Anyhoo... big plans for the weekend? Tonight our very good friends are coming over for dinner and drinks and lots and lots of catch up. And tomorrow Grandma's coming by to watch the kiddos so we can get all dolled up for dinner. It's a little date night so we can celebrate our four years.
